And The Mountains Echoed Chapter 5-7
Wow, Chapters 5 to 7 were super fast paced, with intense drama. The chapters switched between the lives of Idres, Pari, and Adel.
Moving on to the important parts about this section. Well the chapter has finally came where they show Pari all grown up. Around chapter 6, Pari is shown living in Paris with her adopted mother Nila. I was particularly super excited to read about Pari’s life in Paris after being sold and taken away from her brother Abdullah. To my dislike, I hate how Pari has been raised. Nila has taken no care of Pari, rather drowned herself in alcohol. “But I must recommend, and quite emphatically, that she reduce her drinking. She was lucky this time” (191). Pari was constantly at the hospital, taking care of her mom and even the nurses knew Nila was a regular patient. She even left her date with Julian, just to pick up Nila from the hospital, causing a rift between Julian and Pari's relationship. That does not set a good example for Pari, because children learn from their parents. Whatever parents do, children think is right and follow their footsteps. Also, Nila never told Pari the truth about her being adopted. Rather, she constantly abuses Pari and says “I don't see me in you. I don't know who you are” (229). By not telling the truth about her adoption, but constantly degrading her daughter's self esteem, Nila portrays terrible signs as a mother.
Additionally, the relationship between Idris and Timur (cousin brother) was very striking. One thing that really bothered me was how Idris totally forgot about Roshana after moving to America. In the starting I had liked Idris more than Timur, because he was shown as the more quiet, unattractive boy. Whereas, Timur was shown in the negative limelight by Idris saying that he was a greedy and dishonest man. Idris always offered to help Roshana, and took care of her when in need, and she thought he would be the one to help her. However that was proven wrong because Idris never kept his promise, once he returned to America he got busy with his family and work, forgetting about Roshi's surgery. At that time, Timur came as a savior and got Roshi the surgery she needed, he even payed for it. After few years, Roshana is shown as a successful author and she even mentions in her book “to the two angels in my life: my mother Amra, and my Kaka Timur. You are my saviors. I owe you everything” (180). No one would have thought Timur would end up helping Roshi, because of the way Idris described him. However, Timur proved to be the nice and caring one, changing the perspective's of the readers.
For right know, I am in love with this book. Khaled Hosseini's choice of diction, imagery, symbols, etc… are just awesome. The stories he writes are very relatable and many people can connect with them. I can't wait to read ahead, and see what's in store for all the characters.
